It’s A GoCar! Not A Glorified Scooter – San Francisco, California
This was my first time seeing a GoCar! It reminded me of the Walt Disney World ride Tomorrow Land Speedway. It looks a bit ridiculous the passengers wearing helmets with the biker almost in a laugh.
While the novelty of the vehicle is certainly cool the value is anything but cool as the fog that flows into the city daily. The cheapest option you have is a 1-hour drive costing a whopping $54 plus an almost insulating $4.72 fee for Environmental & Energy Fee. Should that fee not be waived since the customer is using a fuel efficient car?
I think the idea of the car is fantastic and it could be really useful for city bound commuters just looking for a simple way to get around it has a few problems. Unlike a bike you have to obey traffic rules and pay to park, can’t go off-road unless you are just crazy and I’m sure would require more upkeep costs and insurance that bikes simply don’t have. That is until some greedy politician taxes bikes. I dread that day but feel it’s coming soon.
The concept of this GoCar is great but if you compare it to renting a real car for the day you would be nuts to rent a GoCar. A cheap rental car can be had for around $80-$100 for the day. That makes the GoCar over $1300 to rent for the day! Still they are cute looking.
Here is some information on the vehicle pulled straight from Wikipedia - GoCar is a two-seater, 3 wheeled vehicle that runs with a 49cc size scooter engine. It is legally classed as a scooter to drive on the roads. GoCars run with a 49cc Scooter engine, made by Trigger Technics BV of Leiden, in the Netherlands.
GoCars have an integrated audio GPS system which runs through the patented navigation software "FoundAround". This allows the cars to give driving instructions to passengers around specific routes, at the same time as providing a tour guide-style commentary around a city.
The GoCar Concept was conceived, developed and created by Nathan Withrington and Alasdair Clements in 2003 and the tour service was launched in April 2004 San Francisco, USA.
